In 2018 artist Jan Sierhuis turned 90. From 12 June to 12 August 2018 Museum Jan van der Togt considered this with an extensive overview of his oeuvre, under the name "The studio of Jan Sierhuis". In addition to works from various periods, the exhibition also showed photographs, old drawings and other memorable finds from his studio.
In 1948 Jan Sierhuis (1928) was involved in the CoBrA group. However, he was too young to become a member. In the end, Sierhuis became one of the leading Dutch expressionists of the twentieth century. “Without figuration, I would never have known exactly what to talk about, a hold. For me, life is that coat. From there I paint. Never from a formalism or from a theory. "
For his work, Sierhuis received the Royal Subsidy for Painting, the Thérèse van Duyl-Schwartze portrait prize. In 1987 he was awarded the Jeanne Oosting Prize. He also received an honorable mention at the Prix de Rome. In 2002 Sierhuis became an Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau.
The documentary "Jan Sierhuis self-portrait" (2017) was broadcast simultaneously with the exhibition. Sierhuis looks back - while painting his last self-portrait - on his eventful and colorful life.
