From 24 August to 7 October 2018, Museum Jan van der Togt showed "Frans & Marja de Boer Lichtveld - A sculpture of 45 years of working together". For the first time, an extensive retrospective exhibition was dedicated to this Amstelveen artist duo. The more than 80 works that were shown, including sculptures, gouaches and reliefs, made the exhibition a journey through time. Where it started with collages and kinetic objects in the 60s and 70s, tight stainless steel images were created in the 80s and colorful sculptures in public space from the 90s to the 21st century.
Frans (1942 - 2016) and Marja (1941) de Boer Lichtveld initially worked as individual artists. At the same time they visited the Institute of Applied Arts Education, the current Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Not much later, Frans and Marja moved into a former school in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, where they shared a studio. From 1970 they went one step further; they became an artist duo and worked together on the same projects from now on.
In more than 45 years Frans and Marja completed an unprecedented amount of assignments and free work. Their works are represented in numerous museum and company collections. For this exhibition Museum Jan van der Togt receives loans from, among others, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Museum van Bommel van Dam and the BPD Art Collection.
Publication The publication "Frans and Marja de Boer Lichtveld - An image of 45 years of working together" was published with the exhibition. The book takes a tour of the long series of images in the public space. Piet Augustijn and Lloyd W. Benjamin III describe the dozens of projects in an exceptionally lively way. More than 240 photos, mostly in color, complete the picture. Sponsor The exhibition was made possible in part by the Municipality of Amstelveen. Thanks to Volvo Bangarage.
