From 12 June to 12 August 2018, Museum Jan van der Togt dedicated an exhibition to the work of Aad Donker. The reason for the exhibition was the new novel by Eva Posthuma de Boer, And the miracle is you, inspired by the life of Aad Donker. Together with Gijs Donker, the oldest brother of Aad, Eva Posthuma de Boer made a selection from the hundreds of self-portraits that Aad Donker painted.
Aad Donker (1967 - 1998) became famous in the early nineties with his brothers Gijs and Justus as a member of the artists' collective After Nature, which also included Peter Klashorst, Jurriaan van Hall, Bart Domburg and Ernst Voss. They found their inspiration in nature and expressionism, and were particularly successful with live performances, in which they painted large canvases in the midst of the public.
In 1994 After Nature worked for a few months in a gallery in New York. There Aad Donker met his great love, the American Amy, daughter of one of the richest art collectors of the time. When the turbulent relationship with Amy failed, Aad lost control of his life. He committed suicide at the age of 31.
Aad Donker documented his life in the form of many diaries, letters and countless self-portraits. He thereby left behind a rich archive that was opened for this exhibition by Stichting Aad Donker.
