During the school year, Museum JAN will prepare educational packages for primary and secondary schools in the Amstelland region. We would be happy to discuss with you how we can adjust the offer below to your lessons - at school or during after-school care. If you are interested, please email us at educatie@museumjan.nl

Primary school

Partying with paint! (groups 1-6)

In Museum JAN, you will find the paintings of Sam Francis which feature an explosion of colours and shapes. You can look at art, but art can also make you feel something. When we walk through the exhibition hall, we may ask questions like: was the artist angry, happy or sad when he made this painting? Which colour goes with which emotion? These are the questions that the children have in their hearts and minds when they start working in the JAN JUNIOR studio. This is where they will experiment with finger paints to create their own action painting. Fun is guaranteed during the painting activities!

My museum house (groups 3-4)

Co-founder Jan Verschoor lives in Museum JAN. Just imagine you would be living in a museum yourself. After a short guided tour of the museum, children can build their own museum in a peep box. How would you organize the interior, what colour would you give the walls, who would live there and what would you like to hang above the couch? By answering these questions, each student creates his/her own miniature museum to take home.

Art in Motion (groups 5-6)

Art in Motion demonstrates students how artists create movement in images. The first lesson consists of an intro video in which our museum teacher explains more and asks quiz questions about moving images like those of Jean Tinguely and Studio Drift. In the second lesson, the students are given a tour of Museum JAN past Rob Brünnmayer's 'wind mobiles', after which they create their own moving artwork. In the final lesson at school, the participants get to work with a miracle disc.

From PET bottle to glass art (groups 7-8)

Museum JAN has an extensive collection of glass art by major (inter)national artists. The programme starts with a guided tour and a treasure hunt in the exhibition halls, followed by a workshop. In this workshop, students will create their own works of art using paint and gemstones. Inspired by glass artist Bernard Heesen, they will transform a plastic PET bottle into a colourful work of glass art!

Secondary school

Painting in action (groups 1-6)

Museum JAN's permanent collection contains action paintings by Sam Francis. His canvases show an explosion of shapes and colours. In the painting process, the artist is able to express all kinds of emotions. We will start with a guided tour of his paintings, after which we will get to work in our studio. See and feel the action paintings of Sam Francis and create a spectacular work of art in his abstract style. Ready, set? Let’s start painting!

Crash course in photography (groups 1-3)

This programme encourages students to look closely at art objects and to take an interesting photograph of a work of glass art. The museum teacher will explain glass art using photography themes such as colour, composition and shadow. The participants will then be challenged to take photographs and to edit those into an 'instagrammable' works of art!

Is that really art?! (groups 4-6)

In 'Is that really art?!" we will try to answer the question 'what is art?'. Is it important that something is original or cleverly made? In combination with assignments in the exhibition halls, the museum teacher will start a discussion about what students do or do not consider to be art. This involves not only answering the question, but also formulating one's own opinion.
