Following the enormous success of our previous master classes, Museum JAN is organising two new ones. The exhibition of artist Saskia Boelsums is the starting point of the master classes, which will focus on nature photography.

Lesson 1: In the first lesson, the participants will go out with their cameras to take pictures of the landscape of Amstelveen. Under the guidance of our specialised guest instructor, you will learn how to take the most beautiful landscape photos using your own SLR, system camera or smartphone.

Practical info: These master classes are intended for various levels. They can be done together or separately. Please bring your own camera (SLR, compact camera, system camera, smartphone). Each lesson will start with a viewing session in Museum JAN.

Price: €12.50 per masterclass, €20 for two workshops (entrance fee included).

Lesson 2: The second lesson will focus on post-processing images. After taking the photographs, Saskia Boelsums spends a lot of time processing them. She spends hours perfecting her landscapes. During the master class, this post-processing can be done in various ways, digitally as well as analogously.

In this two-part lecture, artist Saskia Boelsums and art historian Sophie van Steenderen will discuss landscape art.

In her photography, Boelsums builds on the art-historical painting tradition of romanticised and impetuous landscapes, such as the watercolours of Johan Hendrik Weissenbruch, the cloudscapes of John Constable and the paintings of the Barbizon School. This shows that the dividing line between painting and photography can be small.

"The photos are my sketches and form the basis of my later carefully designed digital images. My main aim is to show the experience of that moment."

Sophie van Steenderen is curator of the Stadsmuseum Harderwijk. In this evening's lecture, she will put Boelsums' art into a wider art historical perspective and compare her work to that of prominent landscape painters. Ranging from Jacob van Ruisdael with his Dutch cloudscapes to Claude Monet and his atmospheric, colourful depiction of nature.
