Exhibition Sam Drukker - Onderweg

Sam Drukker - Onderweg (Sam Drukker - On the Move) will show paintings and drawings by artist Sam Drukker (1957, Goes) made between 2010 and 2021. Drukker is known for his portraits painted with loose brush strokes on old and found materials. In his work, he captures people in all their various facets. Uncertainty, strength, beauty and old age can be seen in paintings in which the people portrayed seem to be on the move; sometimes deliberately and sometimes uprooted, with a destination as yet unknown.

"Perfect beauty in people lies in all their imperfections", according to artist Sam Drukker.

Searching
People have been the main theme in Sam Drukker's work for years. Portraits are painted in a lively manner, with the subject sometimes looking at the viewer in a defiant manner and sometimes looking away, as if lost in thought. Since 2010, Drukker has been painting people who are searching: expelled, displaced and on their way to the next unknown chapter in their lives. They literally stand with suitcase and plastic bags in hand, or can be seen rowing in a boat on their way to freedom. The 2014 Minje series depicts ten Jewish men who experienced and survived the Second World War as adults.  Sam Drukker paints and draws on wooden planks and pieces of canvas or tent fabric that he has found. Used materials that already carry a story. Sam includes that story in his work. Recent work such as the paintings

Plague and Falling Man will be exhibited in Museum JAN for the first time. Sam Drukker has previously exhibited in venues like Museum het Rembrandthuis, Museum van Loon the Jewish Historical Museum.

"The urgency is so evident in this canvas. At a time when so much is unpredictable and uncertain as a result of the pandemic, you see some people moving flexibly while others are weighed down by it. Sam Drukker depicts this recognisable, intangible burden in a compelling manner", says Marieke Uildriks, director of Museum JAN, about Sam Drukker's most recent work 'Plaag’ (Plague).
