On the occasion of the eighty-fifth birthday of Klaas Gubbels (1934), Museum Jan van der Togt in Amstelveen shows from 21 May to 25 August 2019 a selection of paintings that have been created in close collaboration with the artist. Around 25 works are exhibited that mean a lot to the artist and that he did not want to give up throughout his life. His paintings can be seen from various periods of his life; from the old investigative work to the well-known jug and new work. This exhibition is part of ARTZUID Annex Amstelveen.

The Rotterdam-born artist uses everyday objects as a motif for his paintings and sculptures. He is known for his paintings of coffee pots, tables and chairs. In his paintings, the coffee pot - usually called a kettle by himself - is, as it were, a character. He sits on a chair at a table or meets other brightly colored kettles in the flat surface. Gubbels wants to exploit the monotonous and puts the focus on the essence by omitting everything superfluous. “You can make a beautiful painting ... that's possible. But a painting that says something ... that's what I want, "says Gubbels.

ARTZUID Annex Amstelveen Museum With this exhibition, Jan van der Togt connects with ARTZUID Annex Amstelveen, as an extension of ARTZUID Amsterdam. In Amstelveen, sculptures of Klaas Gubbels will be shown outdoors in several places. The Jan van der Togt Museum is the starting point of the route through Amstelveen to Amsterdam.
