What makes design or art valuable? Has it to do with aesthetics, exclusivity, the material, craftsmanship, time, emotion? Is it a combination of these? Or are there other ways to determine the value of art? And can a copy be as valuable as the original? This evening, jewellery maker and artist Ted Noten will engage a conversation with two young artists Mart Veldhuis and Elsemarijn Bruys. A stimulating Q&A led by moderator Natasja Admiraal on themes such as originality, craft and the power of humour in design.
Ted Noten completed his education as a jewellery designer at the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design and the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. He became known for his bags and jewellery where objects like pistols, jewellery as well as deceased animals like a chameleon were moulded into blocks of acrylate (PMMA).
Illustrator Mart Veldhuis (1991) immediately received a lot of national attention for his graduation project Eigen Schuld2021. His work is an indictment of the student loan system. Veldhuis sold the work for the exact sale price of his own student debt for €45,879.40.
Elsemarijn Bruys (1989) creates sculptures and architectural interventions with the spatial experience for the visitor as a starting point. Her cross-disciplinary designs bring together fashion, theatre and graphic expressions and create interactive installations in space.
Moderator of the evening is Natasja Admiraal (1986), freelance fashion journalist and writer. In 2014, she founded the online lexicon mode-abc.com, an inspiring knowledge base on fashion, clothing and accessories.
