These masterclasses consist of two lessons, one ticket suffices for both classes.
Lesson two takes place on Sunday 5 February.
In 1939, Dutch painter Wim Oepts settled in Paris, from where he developed his own recognisable style. Landscape - or 'le paysage composé' - became his main subject from the 1940s onwards. On the one hand, a typical Oepts painting consists of bright, unnatural colours, angular shapes and simplified surfaces. On the other hand, the landscape - a building, a tree or a mountain - remains recognisable. Participants of these Masterclasses will be able to further explore this semi-abstract style of Oepts. They will do this not only by watching, but mainly by painting themselves.
Lesson 1 - Painting in coloured surfaces
In this lesson, participants will focus on two important aspects of Oepts' work: composition and colour. With regard to the first aspect, the painter clearly divides his work into surfaces, creating a balance between horizontal and vertical lines. The bright and versatile colours add even more depth and warmth to the painting. Inspired by the paintings in the exhibition, participants will create an abstract composition on paper based on various fragments. Participants will then paint these to get a better understanding of the technique used by Oepts and his contemporaries. The main attention will not be on detailed painting, but on working in coloured surfaces in a collage-like manner.
Lesson 2 – My landscape on canvas
Oepts was moved by the sunny French landscapes of Saint-Tropez, Clermont-l'Hérault and Boisseron. "I'm really inspired by the South," he explained. In other words, painting is not only a matter of seeing, but also of feeling. What kind of landscape enchants you? Bring an A4-sized photograph, get advice from a professional painter and experiment with colour, shape and texture. After the basic principles learned in lesson 1, the participants will work out their own version of a landscape through the eyes of Wim Oepts. The aim is to develop a personal colour palette and composition.
Programme structure
Each lesson starts with an interactive viewing experience accompanied by the instructor in the exhibition hall; we will meet at the museum entrance. The workshop will take place at Museum JAN's studio, a former school building: located at Dorpsstraat 28, only a 1-minute walk from the museum.
Materials
Painting materials such as oil paint, brushes, palette(knives), easels, and painting aprons are all included. Not included are: oil paint brushes, old wipes to clean brushes with. Please note: because we work with oil paints, we recommend that you put on clothes that may get dirty.
Anna Khodorovich (1974) paints and draws landscapes with attention to composition. In her artworks, she focuses on texture, matter, colour and tonality. She works with different media such as oil paint, oil pastel, acrylic ink and India ink. Khodorovich's classes are all about looking carefully and being conscious of what and how you depict something. As an art teacher, she shares her knowledge of materials and techniques through a balance between verbal explanation and interaction.
